YouTube Monetization and Recommendation Policy Data Collection
Hello and thank you for your consideration in participating in the PLEX-Lab’s research study into YouTube monetization and recommendation policy. This page will direct you on how to participate in this study.
Informed Consent
Before participating in this study it is important that you read and sign the following informed consent form. Please read this form in its entirety. You will be asked to sign your consent before you may proceed with this study. If you do not wish to participate after reading this consent form, you may close this page.

Instructions to Participate in the Study
Please ensure that you have read the Informed Consent document and that you have downloaded the YouTube-Crawler before you begin. The following instructions are somewhat onerous, but are necessary to protect your anonymity.
- Unzip the downloaded YouTubeCrawler.zip file
- In the Chrome Browser, navigate to the chrome extensions page: chrome://extensions/ . Note that the URL link may not directly work. If you encounter issues, please copy the URL and paste it into your web browser.
- Check the Developer Mode button at the top right of the screen.
- Select Load Unpacked at the top left of the screen. You will be asked to select a folder.
- Select the BetaStudiosExtension folder inside the unzipped YouTubeCrawler folder.
The application will open a new Chrome Browser window. Upon opening, the application will also ask that you review and sign the consent form. Please fill out this form here as well. The application will open your YouTube Studio page and begin collection of data. After this point your attention is no longer required. Please do not minimize the chrome window running the extension, as this can cause the extension to stop collecting data. After collecting data, the extension will uninstall itself. After this point, your participation in the study will have concluded.
If You Encounter an Issue With the Extension
If you encounter any issues with the extension, please reach out to the research staff directly at youtubestudy@plexlab.net or via any of the contact information listed in the consent form. You may manually uninstall the study extension by navigating to the chrome://extensions/ URL in your web browser and pressing the Remove button on the YouTube Beta Studio Crawler extension.
